Drawer AI has developed a system that leverages the latest AI technology to perform a quantity takeoff of electrical plans in minutes vs days of manual takeoff.

To achieve these exciting results, Drawer AI has spent years researching to ensure the technology solves real problems on real projects. Thousands of drawings from hundreds of projects have been analyzed and used to train the AI systems that power the app. Thousands of symbols have been identified and checked to verify the results. Many industry-leading firms have worked with us for years to direct and validate the results. See the sections below for the specific details on three prominent features.

Preparation
Upon uploading a set of your drawings, our AI system conducts a comprehensive and automatic analysis. It identifies drawing types, including plans, schedules, legends, and riser diagrams. For each drawing, the AI assistant extracts information. The system then identifies and separates elements like the architectural background, clouds, grids, text, etc. This meticulous process ensures that the cleanest plans are sent for light fixture and power device detection.

Light Fixture Detection
The Drawer AI assistant automatically detects the light fixture schedule in a drawing set and extracts a list of fixtures. Then our advanced AI technology detects those fixtures and their tags on the plans, measures their sizes, and adds them to the bill of materials in the Takeoff Pad. The whole process takes just a couple of minutes.

Power Device Detection
Similar to the light fixture schedule detection and extraction, the AI assistant for power devices reads the symbol legend from your drawing set.

The team has trained the AI system to recognize all power device symbols. Additionally, the assistant was trained to find the tags that identify the device’s properties, such as the assigned panel and circuit number, and other features, such as the device type (e.g., GFCI) and mounting height (e.g.,+72”).

Branch Routing
Once all the power devices are found and the panel and circuit information has been extracted and applied to them, the assistant will search for and identify panels. The panel schedules are also automatically identified, and the data is extracted to determine each circuit’s breaker size and load. With the power devices, panels, and circuit information all extracted, the AI assistant is ready to use computational design technology to perform branch routing.

The final step is to set your branch routing preferences based on NEC codes. The assistant determines which circuits to group per home run and analyzes thousands of possible locations for the home run box to find the optimal position. It then
routes the home runs from the panels to the home run boxes and continues with branch runs to connect all devices.

Will AI take my job?

No. AI can be an amazing assistant technology. Completing an estimate is an art and a science requiring a tremendous amount of domain knowledge and human experience. This combination is impossible to automate. AI will not be able to fully automate electrical estimating in the foreseeable future. However, AI can already perform many tasks to assist an estimator.
Much of the tedious counting and routing can be automated. With some guidance, AI can significantly reduce the time required for this work. With AI assistance, estimators can spend more time on higher-value analysis. And you’ll find your bid confidence is increases because you have more free time for analysis and AI that accurately performs detection and routing tasks. When an estimator is paired with an AI copilot, estimates can be created in less time and with higher confidence.
